SQL Database Programmer / Data & Reporting Analyst

Position Summary

This position is responsible for development and operational support on business databases and reporting output.  This may include data transfers, data integrity, application support, and design and development of complex reporting.  This position is responsible for following general department guidelines while effectively performing job functions.  It is expected that due to the nature of this hybrid role the proportion of time between Analyst and Developer responsibilities will fluctuate; at times being focused more heavily on one or the other role. 

Database Developer

  • This position is responsible for the design and development of scripts and/or ETL processes for data integration, data maintenance or bug fixes.
  • Write and maintain functional and technical specifications.
  • Develops complex SQL scripts, views, and stored procedures
  • Provide technical support to database applications including, data conversion and data integration supporting back-end insurance processes such as claims, billing, policy printing, inspections and reporting. 
  • Analyze, define and document system requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, interfaces with other systems, auditing, reporting requirements and production configuration.
  • Analyze code for problem resolution and performance optimization.
  • Analyze data requirements for completeness and data integrity.
  • Create test plans, test data sets and run automated testing to ensure all components of the system meet specifications.
  • Create flat files that meet statutory requirements.
  • This position is responsible for following general department guidelines and implementing carrier reporting and business intelligence reporting requirements from users, external carriers and other team members.

Reporting Analyst

  • This position is responsible for leading efforts in analyzing, clarifying, and understanding the implications of requirements and data availability to deliver reporting tools for carriers as well as internal users. 
  • Specific duties could include data analysis, data mapping, system requirements documentation and functional testing for the carrier and operational reporting of ICAT’s data / data warehouse environment.
  • The person in this position is required to be strong in data analysis, integration of data across the enterprise systems, and data presentation.  They are expected to know and understand best practices in ICAT’s report development, data analysis, design, development and testing.
  • Provide and support self-service reporting and analysis capabilities to end users.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

  • Analyze, define and document system requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, interfaces with other systems, auditing, reporting requirements and production configuration.
  • Performs moderately to highly-complex data analysis and data profiling activities for source systems and data warehouse applications.
  • Understands business and technology environments, application, systems and process capabilities.
  • Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high level information into details, abstract up from low level information to general understanding and distinguish user requests from the underlying true needs. 
  • Understanding of a wide range of interpretive analysis tools (e.g. trend analysis, spreadsheets, comparisons, graphs, summary versus detail charts, drill down, correlations, exception analysis)
  • Ability to question and verify data quality in reports.
  • Analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical people
  • Develop test plans with adequate coverage in support of Reporting designs and development to ensure high quality deliverables.
  • Ensures that development related items follow the change management process and are entered and tracked through the change management software.
  • Provides Tier 1 and 2 application production support related to database integrations and reporting applications. 
  • Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate in a team setting.
  • Analyze SQL code for problem resolution and performance optimization.
  • Develops accurate estimates for work to be performed.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, current and validity of the reporting data.
  • Work with other developers, the QA team and business analysts to ensure interface and reporting requirements are met.
  • Research and diagnose reported application problems (production support) and take the appropriate action towards problem resolution.
  • Is responsible to ensure resulting development work product adheres to best practices and development standards.
  • Assist with ad-hoc requests.
  • Ensure that individual and team performance meets ICAT’s standards of service and quality.
  • Work collaboratively with all ICAT personnel and business partners.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all ICAT personnel, including your direct manager, and business partners.
  • Maintain knowledge of and support ICAT’s company values and strategic plan
  • Additional duties as assigned

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of database and report development and / or data integration across enterprise systems.
  • 3+ years PL-SQL, T-SQL and SSRS preferred
  • 1-3 years BI tools.
  • Strong knowledge of data analysis, data transformation, and meta-data management.
  • Strong knowledge / experience in one or more SDLC methodologies.
  • Multi-task effectively across several different development projects.
  • P&C Insurance knowledge, XML, XSLT, XLST:FO, Java, Web Service a plus, but not required.
  • Practical experience with techniques used to manage a business intelligence environment.
