Senior Health and Benefits Consultant - MERCER

The Senior Health & Benefits Consultant will lead strategic consulting engagements with employers of all sizes regarding their group insurance benefits plans, and will negotiate with benefits carriers and vendors to secure competitive plan coverage for these employers. Level of support provided depends on size of client as well as complexity and revenue of the account – at this level the senior consultant is the client lead and is often the Mercer relationship manager. To fulfill this role, the consultant will:

  • Manage different projects (renewal, request for proposals, redesign, program implementation, financial projections, etc.) from start to finish;
  • Ensure the quality of deliverables and respect of timelines;
  • Develop budgets and prepare invoices;
  • Act as the client’s primary contact for the work and preparation/delivery of results;
  • Act as an intermediary between clients and insurers;
  • Provide expert advice and strategic support for project management;
  • Work with Mercer subject matter experts to help clients with complex situations that require additional research or discussion;
  • Delegate and oversee the work of more junior team members;
  • Assess liabilities and expenses associated with post-retirement and/or post-employment benefit plans - under Canadian, US, and/or international accounting standards, and according to Mercer standards;
  • Perform peer reviews of valuations;
  • Advise clients on the impact of changes to accounting rules.

Qualifications

  • BA degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science or equivalent
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries or holder of a representative’s certificate in group insurance of persons from the AMF
  • Eight to twelve years of relevant experience in group insurance
  • Understanding of employee benefit plans and current healthcare issues
  • Superior analytical, strategic planning, communication, and listening skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple and complex tasks in a demanding work environment
  • Proven management skills in leading large, complex projects  
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and mentor more junior level staff
  • Bilingual (English/French) - required
