The Defined Benefit Investment Associate will work as part of our DB Investment Consulting team within Mercer’s Wealth practice, which provides a full range of services for sponsors of defined benefit plans. 

This role consists of supporting consultants in projects ranging from preparation of investment performance monitoring reports, investment manager search reports, asset mix studies, investment structure reviews, investment manager transitions and responding to client inquiries.  As the Associate gains more experience, the role will shift toward project management and peer review of various types of reports.

This position requires interactions with clients. The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. As part of this role, the Associate will be expected to support consultants in responding to client needs.

Mercer’s DB consulting team utilizes a full suite of proprietary tools and databases in the delivery of these services (e.g. global database housing our research on investment managers).

To fulfill this role, the ideal candidate should be able to:

  • Be involved with the preparation and peer review of various types of reports
  • Demonstrate knowledge of defined benefit plans, including regulatory and governance aspects
  • Demonstrate knowledge in core investment strategies and support plan sponsors in selecting the appropriate investment structure and investment strategies
  • Determine clients’ requirements and brief the team as appropriate, providing the direction and guidance required to ensure deadlines and service standards are met.
  • Direct the work of analysts in a project team and coach/mentor others.
  • Play a key role in investment manager searches, investment structure reviews, asset allocation studies, new business presentations and other investment-related activities

Qualifications and attributes required:

  • A bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, actuarial science, or other business-related areas with strong quantitative and analytical course content
  • A professional designation such as (CFA, FRM or PRM) would be an asset 
  • 4 to 6 years of investment experience, with a preference for investment consulting or work experience with a DB plan sponsor
  • Expert level knowledge of institutional defined benefit environment
  • Very strong communication and project management skills
  • Ability to deliver multiple complex projects within short timeframes
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and mentor junior-level staff
  • Adaptable and collaborative work style
